Add soft, puffy blooms to your crafts! Learn How to Crochet Puff Stitch Flowers with easy steps and leftover yarn.

Make colorful crochet puff stitch flowers with leftover yarn and a crochet hook. These small flowers are easy to make and can be used to decorate your crochet projects or other crafts. You can also join several flowers together to create a thick, puffy floral fabric.
For this project, we used Lion Brand Yarn Bonbons in DK weight with a size H (5 mm) crochet hook. This yarn helps show the loops in each puff stitch clearly. You can use different yarn types and hook sizes to change the look of your flowers. You can also mix different yarn types, as long as they are the same weight.
What You’ll Need
– Crochet hook
– Scissors
– Multiple colors of yarn
– Yarn needle
Choosing the Right Yarn and Hook

DK-weight yarn works well for these flowers because it creates clear puff stitches without making the petals too bulky. Cotton yarn gives the petals a firmer shape, while acrylic yarn makes them softer. If you use a different yarn weight, choose a hook that works well with that yarn. Keep the same yarn weight throughout the flower so the petals look even.
A Note About the Petals
Each of the six single crochet stitches around the flower center holds one puff stitch petal. After finishing a petal, make a slip stitch into the next single crochet stitch. Work the next puff stitch into that same stitch. Repeat this around the center to make all six petals.
How to Crochet Puff Stitch Flowers
Make the Center of the Flower

Choose a yarn color for the flower center and make a magic circle. Chain 1, then work 6 single crochet stitches into the circle. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch and pull the yarn tail to close the ring tightly. You should now have 6 stitches around the center. Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a small tail.
If you don’t want to use a magic circle, make a ring with chain stitches and work 6 single crochet stitches into the center.
Add the Petal Color
Choose a second yarn color for the petals. Insert your hook into one of the single crochet stitches and pull the new yarn through. Tie the yarn to secure it, then pull up a loop with your hook.
Make the First Petal
Chain 3 to start the first flower petal. These chain stitches set the height of the puff stitch.
Create a Puff Stitch

Work a puff stitch into the same single crochet stitch where you made the chain 3. Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, and yarn over again to pull up a loop. Repeat this process 5 times. Each time, pull the loop up to the same height as the chain 3. You should have 11 loops on your hook.
Keep the Puff Stitch Loops Even
Pull each loop up to the same height when making a puff stitch. If some loops are shorter than others, the petal may look uneven. Avoid pulling the yarn too tightly. Keep the loops loose enough to pull your hook through all 11 loops easily.
Finish the Puff Stitch
Chain 1 to secure the puff stitch. Then chain 2 more. These 3 chain stitches complete the puff stitch and help connect the petal to the flower center.
Finish the First Petal with a Slip Stitch

Make a slip stitch into the next single crochet stitch. This completes the first petal and moves your hook to the starting point for the next petal. As you crochet around the flower, you can work over the loose yarn ends to secure them.
Check the Space Between the Petals
Keep your chain stitches loose enough to let the petals spread around the flower center. If you make them too tight, the flower may curl inward. Check that the chain stitches lie flat before moving on to the next petal.
Make the Second Petal
After making the slip stitch into the next single crochet stitch, chain 3. Work a puff stitch into that same single crochet stitch. This creates the second petal.
Make the Remaining Puff Stitch Petals

After completing the second puff stitch, chain 1 to secure it and chain 2 more. Make a slip stitch into the next single crochet stitch. Chain 3 and work a puff stitch into that same stitch.
Repeat these steps around the flower. Make one puff stitch in each single crochet stitch until you have six petals in total.
Keep All Six Petals the Same Size
Use the same number of loops for each puff stitch so all six petals look similar. Pull each loop up to the same height and keep your tension even as you work around the flower. Check the petals as you go so you can fix any uneven stitches before finishing.
Finish the Flower

After making the sixth petal, make a slip stitch into the first single crochet stitch. Fasten off the yarn and cut it.
Weave in the Yarn Ends and Tighten the Center
The center of the magic circle may loosen as you make the petals. Pull the yarn tail to tighten it, then weave in the end to keep it secure. Gently pull the other yarn ends to bring the stitches together. Weave in all the remaining ends and trim any extra yarn.
Shape the Flower Petals

Once you have secured the yarn ends, spread the petals gently with your fingers. If one petal looks folded or twisted, adjust it before using the flower. You can also lightly block the finished flower if the petals do not lie flat. Use a method suitable for your yarn, especially if you are working with acrylic.
How to Join Puff Stitch Flowers Together

You can join several flowers to make a scarf, blanket, or other larger project. Place two flowers next to each other and match the edges of their petals. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the petals together with small stitches. Repeat until you have joined all your flowers.
Ways to Use Puff Stitch Flowers

– Sew them onto hats for decoration.
– Add a pin to the back and wear one as a brooch.
