Cut the Wire

Start with around 20 pieces of wire, each measuring 10 to 12 inches. This should give you enough material for a small tree. If you prefer a fuller crown, cut a few extra pieces.

Gather the wires into one bundle and hold them near the middle. Don’t spend time lining up every end. Some uneven lengths won’t cause a problem, and you can trim them later if needed.

Twist the Trunk

instructables

Hold the bundle firmly and twist the wires together to form the trunk. Work downwards, leaving the top strands loose for the branches. Stop before you reach the bottom, too, so you have enough wire left to make the roots.

Keep the trunk tight enough to hold its shape, but don’t twist every strand into one solid bundle. You’ll need some separate wires to build out the tree.

Shape the Branches

Split the loose wires at the top into several small groups. Twist each group to make a branch, then separate the remaining ends into smaller sections for thinner branches.

There’s no need to follow a particular pattern here. Bend a few branches upwards and let others extend out to the sides. If they all point in the same direction, move some around until the tree looks more balanced.

Thin wire usually bends easily between your fingers. For smaller curves or stubborn pieces, use pliers and work slowly so you don’t kink the wire. Keep an eye on the sharp ends while shaping the branches.

Add Beads for Decoration

You can leave the tree as it is, especially if you like the simple look of twisted metal. To add a little colour, slide small beads onto a few branch tips. Bend the ends of the wire slightly so the beads stay in place.

Start with just a handful of beads and see how they look. Adding too many can make the branches crowded, and heavy beads may cause them to droop. You can always add a few more once you’re happy with the shape.

Form the Roots

Now work on the loose wires at the bottom. Divide them into several groups, twist each group a little, and spread the ends out around the trunk. These wires will act as the roots and help support the tree.

Set the sculpture on a flat surface to check its balance. If it tips to one side, adjust the roots until the trunk stands more upright. It’s worth taking a little extra time here before fixing the tree to its base.

Attach the Tree to the Base

Attach the Tree to the Base

A small, flat stone or a piece of wood makes a suitable base. Position the roots where you want them and check that the tree stands properly before adding any glue.

Use a strong adhesive that is suitable for the wire and base material. Hold the tree steady while the adhesive sets, following the instructions on the product. Give it enough time to dry before moving the sculpture.

Adjust the Branches

Once the base is secure, take another look at the tree. You might find that a branch sticks out too far or that one side looks thinner than the other. Gently bend the wires to fill any gaps and trim ends that seem too long.

Don’t try to make both sides identical. A little unevenness makes the sculpture look less stiff. You can also bend the trunk slightly if you prefer a tree that doesn’t stand perfectly straight.

Where to Display Your Wire Tree

When you’re happy with the finished shape, place the tree somewhere it can be seen without the branches getting caught on nearby objects. A desk, bookshelf, or side table can work well. A wooden base gives the sculpture a different look from a simple stone, so choose whichever suits your space.

You can also make another tree with a different shape. Try using longer wires for a taller design or spreading the branches out to make a wider one. Once you’ve worked out how to twist and bend the wire, it’s easy to experiment with your own ideas.
